Kate wrote a single
chapter in an earlier edition of this book, but has completely
rewritten the entire book for this release. She explains:
"When Visual C++ first
came out, the original version of this book explained how to do many
common programming tasks. With each new Wizard, 40 or 50 pages
of the book would disappear. Over time the book became less
coherent; it was time for a rewrite. This edition explains old and
new features in a direct and straightforward style. Lots of
examples and working sample applications make the concepts easier to
understand."
The book is enormous (800 pages,) but
it could have been bigger. It does not cover:
- C++ basics : classes, constructors,
syntax
- Object oriented analysis and design
- OLE/COM/ActiveX details such as
interfaces or marshalling
- User interface design
